Political leaders evoke his democratic legacy at the Cristo Redentor cemetery and call on new generations to follow the example of the social democratic leader.

Santo Domingo.— With an act full of political symbolism and historical memory, the Municipal Committee of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in Santo Domingo North paid tribute to Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez on the occasion of the 89th anniversary of his birth, remembering him as one of the most influential mass leaders in the democratic history of the country.

The activity took place in the mausoleum where his remains rest in the Cristo Redentor cemetery, where floral offerings were placed and cultural expressions and vigils were held, in compliance with Law 46-23 promulgated on August 3, 2023 by President Luis Abinader, which declares April 6 of each year as "National Day in honor of Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez". The event was led by the president of the PRM in Santo Domingo Norte, Isidro Torres, who highlighted that Peña Gómez transcended as a benchmark in the fight for freedom, social justice, and democratic consolidation.

“Peña Gómez had from the beginning the category of political leader, strategist, organizer and exceptional communicator. He was an insatiable reader, polyglot, warrior and peacemaker, but above all a permanent lover of democracy”, he expressed.

Torres recalled that, despite the precariousness that marked his origin, the social democratic leader managed to train at prestigious universities around the world and project his leadership internationally. He also evoked the historic rallies at the head of the 17th bridge, where the deceased leader proudly announced the arrival of the so-called "Imperial Guard" of Villa Mella, now Santo Domingo Norte.

During the activity, the artist Alicia Baroni performed the emblematic song "Hombre de Ébano", dedicated to the late leader, at a moment that sparked emotional applause among those present. Within the framework of the commemoration, former President Hipólito Mejía also spoke, who affirmed that the political example of Peña Gómez continues to be an ethical reference for those who practice politics.

"Politicians in some cases discredit ourselves, but politics does not. Whoever knows politics and copies the example of Peña Gómez has no reason to deviate. That is why we must always remember him as an exceptional man," he expressed.

The attendees agreed that the figure of Peña Gómez continues to be a symbol of popular leadership, democratic commitment, and vocation for service, values that continue to inspire new generations of Dominicans. During the meeting, in addition to former President Hipólito Mejía, Isidro Torres, president of the PRM in Santo Domingo Norte, the political leaders Darío de Jesús, Francisco Fernández, Virgilio Merán Valenzuela, José Manuel López, Fernando Durán, Pastora Mendez, among others, were present.
