Mexico City.- Mexican authorities seized a package containing approximately one kilogram of fentanyl at Mexico City International Airport (AICM) this Friday. The package originated from an Asian country and is valued at around 20 million dollars. According to a statement released by the authorities, the agents detected a package declared as 'cosmetics', which "upon being subjected to review using X-ray equipment and with the support of the canine 'Néstor', from the Customs tactical center area, tested positive for possible drugs". The text was disseminated by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) reported on the actions led by the Secretariats of the Navy, Defense, the Attorney General's Office (FGR), the National Guard (GN), along with Customs personnel. The agents thoroughly inspected the package in which they located a hermetically sealed plastic bag containing a white powder, which weighed approximately one kilo.

"Following an infrared identification analysis, it tested positive for fentanyl hydrochloride, so it was channeled to the central Customs laboratory, in order to verify the weight and type of narcotic secured," the SSPC indicated.

According to the agency, this seizure prevented the production of approximately one million doses of fentanyl, with an estimated value of 20 million dollars.

The authorities did not specify the name of the company that would have sent the package, nor the exact country of origin. The actions occur amidst pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has reiterated the possibility of attacking the cartels operating in Mexico to combat drug trafficking. His Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, has repeatedly refused to allow any U.S. military action on Mexican territory. Trump's rhetoric in this regard has increased in intensity after Washington launched a military intervention in Caracas to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and transport him to New York, where he remains in custody and faces drug trafficking charges. From February 2025 until January 14th, the Government of Mexico, thanks to 'Operation Northern Border' -agreed with President Trump to avoid tariffs on Mexico- has detained 10,784 people and confiscated 119.5 tons of drugs, including 602.8 kilograms of fentanyl.
