Santiago.- The First Special Peace Court of Transit of Santiago imposed this Friday three months of preventive prison against Jordany Duarte López, accused of running over the provincial sub-director of the General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transportation Safety (DIGESETT), Carlos Jiménez de los Santos, during an incident that occurred in the middle of a public road.
The precautionary measure must be fulfilled in the Rafey Men's Correction and Rehabilitation Center, after the court accepted the evidentiary elements presented by the Public Ministry and the plaintiff, considering the seriousness of the act and the danger it represented to the officer's life.
According to the victim's lawyer, Valentín Oviedo, the incident occurred last Tuesday when the defendant allegedly ran a red light. When ordered to stop by a DIGESETT agent, Duarte López allegedly accelerated his motorcycle and rammed into Deputy Director Jiménez de los Santos, causing multiple blows and injuries.
"Far from obeying the order to stop, he launched the motorcycle against the officer with conduct that shows a clear intention to cause serious harm, even to take his life," said Oviedo, who called the judge's decision correct.
Meanwhile, the regional director of DIGESETT in Santiago, Leuribis Mancebo, regretted the incident and stated that situations like this reflect the high social cost of recklessness on the roads.

Mancebo took the opportunity to call on the citizenry, especially motorcycle and vehicle drivers, to respect traffic regulations, reminding them that most traffic accidents can be avoided. "Complying with traffic laws is not optional, it is a responsibility to oneself and others. Accidents do not exist, recklessness does," he maintained"No one has won here. Society has lost. A young man facing preventive prison and an officer who could have lost his life due to an irresponsible action," the official expressed.
