Washington.- U.S. President Donald Trump will receive his Salvadoran counterpart, Nayib Bukele, this Thursday in the Oval Office, in a meeting that will take place days after the path was cleared for the Central American leader to seek a third consecutive term.
The White House confirmed the meeting between the leaders which will take place at 11:00 AM Washington time (5:00 GMT).
The new meeting between Trump and Bukele comes in a context of growing bilateral cooperation regarding immigration and the fight against organized crime, two of the priorities that Bukele and Trump have set in their political agendas.
The meeting will also take place just three days after the Salvadoran leader announced his candidacy for a future third consecutive term, something that responds to a controversial constitutional reform approved last year in the Legislative Assembly, controlled by his party, Nuevas Ideas.

In addition to eliminating the two-consecutive-term limit and allowing indefinite presidential reelection, the reform also extended the presidential term from five to six years and eliminated the runoff election, something that critics believe will allow Bukele to perpetuate himself in office and concentrate increasingly more power.
Bukele is one of the most popular leaders in Latin America, driven by his iron-fist policy against gangs, which has been questioned by human rights organizations for the imprisonment of people without criminal records.
El Salvador is among the main regional allies of the Trump Administration, which since its return to the White House in 2025 has strengthened its relationship with right-wing governments in Latin America, and has even publicly backed candidacies in Honduras and Colombia.
