Santo Domingo.– The United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Leah Francis Campos, stated that Washington views the growing presence of China in Latin America and the Caribbean with concern, considering it a strategic challenge within the international arena.
During an interview on the program Despierta con CDN, the diplomat explained that the U.S. position does not seek to question the sovereignty of countries to establish relations with other nations, but rather to defend its own interests amidst global geopolitical competition.
Campos assured that President Donald Trump’s administration is committed to strengthening ties with the Dominican Republic through cooperation, trade, and investment, while highlighting the country’s conditions as a destination for foreign capital.
On another note, the ambassador referred to the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and the Dominican Republic for the management of irregular migrants from third countries.
He indicated that said agreement is part of the immigration policy promoted by the U.S. government and explained that it contemplates the temporary transfer of those migrants to Dominican territory to subsequently be sent to their countries of origin with financial support from the United States.

Likewise, Campos pointed out that the fight against drug trafficking, the combat against corruption, and the prevention of money laundering will continue to be priority areas within the bilateral cooperation between both nations.
Regarding international assistance, the diplomat explained that, although USAID ceased to operate as an independent entity, U.S. aid programs continue under the coordination of the Department of State.
