Santiago.- In the framework of the commemoration of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Northern Medical Union Foundation (FUMN) held its third annual walk with the purpose of raising awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection of this disease. The day began at the front of the health center and followed the route to the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, then returning to the starting point. The activity was attended by directors of the clinic and the foundation, doctors, nurses, administrative staff, as well as the senator for the province of Santiago, doctor Daniel Rivera, and the deputy mayor doctor Mariana Moreno. Prior to the start of the tour, several authorities gave words of motivation, including doctors Delcia Jiménez, from the Imaging Department, and Javiela Tejada, medical director; Senator and former president of the Board of Directors, Daniel Rivera; Vice President Fausto Hernández and Deputy Mayor Mariana Moreno. Dr. Jiménez highlighted that breast cancer continues to be the most frequent in women and warned that many patients arrive late for diagnosis due to fear of the disease. “We urge all women to undergo their routine checkups, because early detection saves lives”, she pointed out.

For her part, Dr. Javiela Tejada recalled that the Unión Médica University Clinic dedicates the entire month of October to activities aimed at prevention, promoting fundamental tools such as breast self-examination and mammograms, which continue to be the most effective methods for detecting cancer in time.

“We want to send a message of hope to women facing a diagnosis: today there are innovative treatments with cure rates between 90 and 95%. We walk for you, so that you are strong and brave, because you are not alone,” Tejada expressed.

The president of the FUMN, Rosa Lourdes Vargas, thanked the Board of Directors of the clinic and the sponsoring companies for supporting this initiative every year. Meanwhile, Dr. Fausto Hernández expressed his satisfaction with the massive participation and urged the attendees to continue promoting the message of prevention. Vice Mayor Mariana Moreno described the walk as a collective effort for a healthier city, highlighting that "prevention is possible and can change lives." Senator and former Minister of Public Health, Daniel Rivera, also thanked the medical community for their support and reiterated that prevention is an essential pillar in the fight against cancer. "Every time we carry out activities like this, many women who did not previously go to the doctor decide to do so, and that helps to detect the disease in time," he said.

Rivera also recalled the importance of medical imaging, which allows for a more precise diagnosis through mammograms, ultrasounds, MRIs, and, in necessary cases, biopsies. He emphasized that this walk represents the commitment to the more than 10.7 million inhabitants of the country, fostering a culture of prevention and health.

With this initiative, the Northern Medical Union Foundation reaffirms its commitment to educate, accompany, and raise awareness among the population about breast cancer, highlighting that prevention remains the best tool to save lives.
