Vinicio Castillo highlights Santiago Matías’ support for the defense of freedom of the press regarding the Penal Code

Santo Domingo.– Political leader Vinicio Castillo Semán highlighted the stance taken by businessman and communicator Santiago Matías (Alofoke) in defense of freedom of expression and the press, by supporting the revision of the articles of the new Penal Code that, according to various sectors, could affect journalistic practice.

Through a post on his Instagram account, Castillo appreciated that Santiago Matías’ influence has been used to promote the debate on the need to modify the provisions that have generated concern among journalists, legal experts, and organizations defending freedom of expression.

“That the influence Santiago Matías (Alofoke) has, has been put in favor of the defense of freedom of expression and the press in the Dominican Republic, threatened by texts in the new Penal Code, I see as very good,” he expressed.

Likewise, he expressed his hope that the National Congress will introduce the necessary modifications before August 3, the date scheduled for the entry into force of the regulations.

Castillo also regretted that the main political parties, civil society organizations, and business sectors have not taken a more active stance on this issue.

The publication was accompanied by an excerpt of the bill that modifies article 192 of the Penal Code, regarding the illicit dissemination of intimate or private content, one of the provisions that has generated the most debate due to its potential implications for freedom of the press.
