WHO refutes links between vaccines and autism, an idea defended from the United States

Analysis conducted by a global committee of security experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) have concluded that there is no causal link between vaccines and autism, in response to calls from the North American Administration of Donald Trump to reopen a debate on the issue.

The new analyses, cited in a press conference by the WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, are based on 31 studies with data from numerous countries published between January 2010 and August 2025, which confirm the safety of vaccines used during childhood and pregnancy and "the absence of a causal link with autism spectrum disorders".

The committee reaffirms conclusions already issued by the same group of experts in 2002, 2004 and 2012 and underlines that vaccines containing aluminum or thimerosal, an organic compound used as a preservative in some vaccines, and which contains mercury, also do not cause autism.

In light of the results, WHO calls on all national health authorities to "rely on the most recent science and ensure that vaccination policies are based on the best available evidence."

"Global childhood immunization efforts represent one of the greatest achievements in improving lives, livelihoods, and the prosperity of societies," WHO defended, noting that in the last half century, childhood immunization has saved at least 154 million lives.

Statements by figures such as U.S. President Donald Trump or his Health Minister, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have revived old theories about alleged links between vaccines and autism or other health conditions, something that the WHO has been trying to combat over the past few months.

Tedros pointed out in the press conference, reviewing the global health situation in the last twelve months, that the disagreements between the WHO and the United States on this issue are proof of the organization's independence, accused on occasions by the North American Administration itself of yielding to pressure from other powers such as China.
