She was first elected in 2004 and was known for her commitment to social justice and the environment. A lawyer by profession and mother of two, her murder has generated a wave of shock in both the political class and the citizenry.\n\n\"My good friend and colleague, President Melissa Hortman, has been brutally murdered this morning along with her husband Mark,\" said Governor Walz, visibly affected. \"She was an irreplaceable figure, an admirable public servant who dedicated her life to improving this state.\"\n\nMeanwhile, Senator John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife are hospitalized after undergoing surgery. \"We are cautiously optimistic about their recovery,\" Walz said.\n\nHoffman was first elected senator in 2012.
