After an amateur career of 14–3, he turned professional in 1959. His rise was sustained but firm: after a notable triumph in 1965 against Frankie Taylor (considered by many as his turning point), he managed to position himself as a world challenger.

The victory against Ortiz was epic: 15 rounds of pure tension where Cruz subdued the champion in his own home. In that historic fight, Ortiz knew he was losing a legacy and Cruz, that he was writing a new one. He retained his crown with a victory over Mando Ramos in Los Angeles, consolidating his status as champion.

However, his reign was brief. He was only 32 years old.

Despite his short career, Teo Cruz's legacy is immense.
