Who was Juan Bosch?<\/h2>\n\n\nSon of immigrants \u2014a Puerto Rican mother and a Catalan father\u2014 Bosch grew up in the rural community of R\u00edo Verde, La Vega. Although he did not finish high school, his self-taught vocation led him to excel from a young age in the literary field. In 1933 he published Camino Real<\/em>, his first book of short stories, beginning a prolific career as a narrator.\n\n\n

Confronting the Dictatorship and Exile<\/h3>\n\n\nInitially a civil servant of the Trujillo regime, he was soon persecuted for his democratic ideas. He went into exile in 1938 and, from abroad, led the opposition to the dictatorship of Rafael Le\u00f3nidas Trujillo. In 1939 he founded the PRD in Cuba. His political activity was combined with his literary work, becoming a prominent voice in the Hispanic American sphere. He was imprisoned by Batista in Cuba and later lived in Costa Rica, Mexico and Spain.\n\n\n

Return and presidency of Juan Bosch in 1963<\/h3>\n\n\nAfter Trujillo’s assassination in 1961, Bosch returned to the country and won the first free elections on December 20, 1962. He assumed the presidency on February 27, 1963. During his seven months in power, he promoted a progressive constitution, defended labor rights, agrarian reform, and social justice. However, his government was overthrown by a military coup on September 25 of that same year.\n\n

Attempts at Return and Founding of the PLD<\/h3>\n\n\nIn the following years, Bosch participated in several electoral processes. He was defeated in 1966 by Joaqu\u00edn Balaguer. In 1973, due to ideological differences with the PRD, he founded the PLD. He represented this organization in five presidential elections (1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994), with his 1990 candidacy being the most competitive.\n\n\n

Literary Production and Political Thought<\/h3>\n\n\nBosch was the author of dozens of short stories, novels, essays, and political texts. His literary work includes titles such as La Ma\u00f1osa<\/em>, Luis Pie<\/em>, La Nochebuena de Encarnaci\u00f3n Mendoza<\/em>, and Camino Real<\/em>. Among his essays, Composici\u00f3n Social Dominicana<\/em>, El Pentagonismo, Sustituto del Imperialismo<\/em>, and De Crist\u00f3bal Col\u00f3n a Fidel Castro<\/em> stand out. His narrative style influenced writers such as Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez.\n\n\n

Acknowledgments and Legacy<\/h3>\n\n\nThroughout his life, Juan Bosch received numerous international recognitions: the Order of F\u00e9lix Varela (Cuba), the Order of Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed, the Legion of Honor (France), and the National Literature Award of the Dominican Republic. He was declared Master of Politics and National Glory by the Dominican Congress.\n\nHe passed away on November 1, 2001, at the age of 92, leaving an indelible mark on the political and cultural history of the Dominican Republic.
