At 8:15 in the morning, the American bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic uranium bomb on the city, marking the beginning of a new era in military and human history. The explosion caused the immediate death of tens of thousands of people and left a final toll of more than 129,000 deaths, including direct and subsequent victims.

After years of war in the Pacific, the United States government sought a way to force the surrender of the Japanese Empire without resorting to a ground invasion, which could have cost hundreds of thousands of lives. President Harry S. Truman, based on military estimates and the secret development of the Manhattan Project, authorized the use of the new nuclear weaponry.

Hiroshima was selected as a target for its strategic relevance and because it had not been previously attacked, which would allow for a precise measurement of the weapon’s impact.

The “Little Boy” bomb and its devastation

The nuclear artifact, nicknamed “Little Boy”, contained uranium-235 and was launched from an altitude of almost 10,000 meters. It detonated about 600 meters above the city with a power equivalent to 15,000 tons of TNT. The explosion destroyed almost everything within a radius of two kilometers, generated a heat wave of more than 4,000 degrees Celsius, and caused widespread fires.

Nearly 80,000 people died instantly, and another 50,000 died in the following weeks, months, and years due to burns, radiation, and related illnesses.

The Human and Social Impact

Most of the victims were civilians, including women, children, and the elderly. Thousands of people were trapped under the rubble, and hospitals collapsed under the magnitude of the injured. The survivors, known as hibakusha, lived for decades with physical, psychological, and social consequences. Many suffered from degenerative diseases, cancers, and social rejection.

The tragedy left a deep mark not only on Japan, but on the collective consciousness of the world.

The ethical and historical debate

Since then, the use of the atomic bomb has been a subject of controversy. While some argue that it was necessary to avoid an invasion and end the war, others believe that it represented an unnecessary show of force and a crime against humanity. The debate still persists among historians, political leaders, and humanitarian organizations.

Three days after the bombing of Hiroshima, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.
