{"id":478217,"date":"2025-08-12T09:55:22","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T13:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/en\/uncategorized\/assassinations-in-colombia-the-trail-of-blood-that-has-marked-politics\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T09:55:22","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T13:55:22","slug":"assassinations-in-colombia-the-trail-of-blood-that-has-marked-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/en\/international\/assassinations-in-colombia-the-trail-of-blood-that-has-marked-politics\/","title":{"rendered":"Assassinations in Colombia: the trail of blood that has marked politics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Bogot\u00e1.-<\/strong> Political violence has marked Colombia with several assassinations throughout its history, including the most recent, Senator and presidential pre-candidate <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/historia\/biografias\/biografia-de-miguel-uribe-turbay\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/historia\/biografias\/biografia-de-miguel-uribe-turbay\/\">Miguel Uribe Turbay<\/a><\/strong>, one of the right-wing's cards for the 2026 elections, who died this Monday in Bogot\u00e1, 64 days after having been seriously injured in an attack.<\/p>\n\n\nThe following is the <strong>list of assassinations committed in the country since the beginning of the 20th century,<\/strong> which begins and ends with the surname Uribe:\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-rafael-uribe-uribe-1914\"><strong>1. Rafael Uribe Uribe, 1914<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/rafael_uribe_uribe_02-466x445-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-514536\" title=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\nGeneral <strong>Rafael Uribe Uribe,<\/strong> head of the liberal troops defeated by the conservatives in the Thousand Days' War (1899-1902), was murdered with axes on the side of the National Capitol on October 15, 1914.\n\nUribe Uribe, <strong>politician with liberal ideas that he defended in Congress<\/strong> and on the battlefield, was a lawyer, military man, senator, diplomat, journalist, and one of the most prestigious public figures in the country.\n\nHe was also the first amnestied and demobilized person assassinated in Colombia after signing peace with the victors of the Thousand Days' War.\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-jorge-eliecer-gaitan-1948\"><strong>2. Jorge Eli\u00e9cer Gait\u00e1n, 1948<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Gaitan-Retoque-color-Leo-Ortiz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-514538\" style=\"width:298px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\nThe liberal leader <strong>Jorge Eli\u00e9cer Gait\u00e1n<\/strong>, who was emerging as the favorite for the 1949 presidential elections, was <strong>shot to death on April 9, 1948, as he was leaving his lawyer's office <\/strong>in downtown Bogot\u00e1, which triggered a wave of violence that went down in history under the name of 'El Bogotazo'.\n\nA lawyer and politician with inflamed oratory, the caudillo led the opposition to the conservative regime of President Mariano Ospina P\u00e9rez due to the rampant political violence following the defeat of the Liberal Party in the 1946 elections, in which it was divided between the official candidate David Turbay and the dissident Gait\u00e1n.\n\n\n<p><strong>You may be interested in: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/internacionales\/reciben-feretro-de-miguel-uribe\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/internacionales\/reciben-feretro-de-miguel-uribe\/\">With white handkerchiefs they receive Miguel Uribe's coffin in the Capitol of Colombia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\nThe cry of <strong>\"They killed Gait\u00e1n\"<\/strong> spread like wildfire through the streets of Bogot\u00e1 where gaitanismo, made up of popular sectors, lynched the attacker, Juan Roa Sierra, so that it was never possible to know if he acted alone or if someone commissioned this never-clarified assassination.\n\nAccording to newspapers of the time, that day ended with the intervention of the Army and at least 550 deaths, a figure that researchers raise to more than 2,000 in Bogot\u00e1 alone, not counting those from other regions of the country to which the violence spread.\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-jaime-pardo-leal-1987\"><strong>3. Jaime Pardo Leal, 1987<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/64AITHGVH5CR5AOG4EKKTE2F6M.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-514539\" style=\"width:437px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\nIt was in 1986 that the first <strong>presidential candidate of the Patriotic Union (UP)<\/strong>, a left-wing party born a year earlier as part of a peace attempt by then-President Belisario Betancur (1982-1986) with the FARC guerrillas, was nominated.\n\nHowever, the UP <strong>was the victim of an extermination campaign in which at least 5,733 of its members were murdered or disappeared<\/strong>, including Pardo Leal, shot by hitmen on October 11, 1987, when he was traveling in his car with his family.\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-luis-carlos-galan-1989\"><strong>4. Luis Carlos Gal\u00e1n, 1989<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/7HSUSXM2BJGK5DYAZY754L6LVM-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-514542\" style=\"width:377px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\nLike Gait\u00e1n, the liberal politician <strong>Luis Carlos Gal\u00e1n<\/strong> was the favorite to win the 1990 presidential elections when he ended up being shot to death on August 18, 1989, during a rally in the town of Soacha, south of Bogot\u00e1.\n\nLawyer, economist, journalist, and politician, Gal\u00e1n was Minister of Education at only 27 years old and later ambassador to Italy, councilor of Bogot\u00e1, and senator.\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Gal\u00e1n was characterized by his <strong>harsh speech against the infiltration of the drug trafficking mafia in politics<\/strong>, which is why they assassinated him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\nTwo of his sons have been senators of the Republic and one of them, Carlos Fernando Gal\u00e1n, is the current mayor of Bogot\u00e1.\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Bernardo.UP_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-514544\" title=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-bernardo-jaramillo-ossa-1990\"><strong>5. Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa, 1990<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nIn the bloodiest presidential campaign Colombia can remember, the assassination of Gal\u00e1n was followed on March 22, 1990, by that of Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa, Pardo Leal's successor as presidential candidate of the Patriotic Union.\n\nJaramillo Ossa, lawyer and senator, was <strong>shot to death by a hitman<\/strong> when he was in the facilities of the Bogota air bridge.\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-carlos-pizarro-leongomez-1990\"><strong>6. Carlos Pizarro Leong\u00f3mez, 1990<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/default-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-514545\" style=\"width:433px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\nHe was the last commander of the <strong>M-19 guerrilla<\/strong>, which he led on March 9, 1990, to sign the peace with the government of President Virgilio Barco (1986-1990), and entered politics as a presidential candidate of the newly created Democratic Alliance M-19.\n\nOn April 26, 1990, less than two months after signing the peace, <strong>Pizarro was assassinated by a hitman who shot him on a plane in mid-flight<\/strong> when he was heading to Barranquilla for an electoral event.\n\nMore than three decades later, Gustavo Petro, who in his youth was a member of the M-19, became President of Colombia, while Senator Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Pizarro, daughter of the murdered leader, aspires to that position in the next elections.\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-alvaro-gomez-hurtado-1995\"><strong>7. \u00c1lvaro G\u00f3mez Hurtado, 1995<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/551686_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-514546\" style=\"width:438px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\nThree-time presidential candidate (1974, 1986 and 1990), the lawyer, journalist, diplomat, writer and politician \u00c1lvaro G\u00f3mez <strong>was the most representative figure of the Conservative Party<\/strong> in the second half of the 20th century and was assassinated in Bogot\u00e1 on November 2, 1995.\n\n\n<p>Considered one of the most important thinkers in the country, \u00c1lvaro G\u00f3mez could not be president because he carried the weight of being the son of former president Laureano G\u00f3mez (1950-1953), nicknamed 'the Monster', by those who consider him one of the instigators of political violence in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1x-1-1024x680.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-514547\" style=\"width:366px;height:auto\" title=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-miguel-uribe-turbay-2025\"><strong>8. Miguel Uribe Turbay, 2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nSenator <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/historia\/biografias\/biografia-de-miguel-uribe-turbay\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/historia\/biografias\/biografia-de-miguel-uribe-turbay\/\">Miguel Uribe Turbay,<\/a><\/strong> from the right-wing Democratic Center party, was seriously injured in an attack on June 7, 2025, while speaking to a group of supporters in a park in the Bogota neighborhood of Modelia and died 64 days later.\n\nUribe Turbay was the grandson of former Liberal President Julio C\u00e9sar Turbay (1978\u20131982) and son of journalist Diana Turbay, who was murdered in January 1991 by the Medell\u00edn cartel, which had her kidnapped for six months.\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bogot\u00e1.- Political violence has marked Colombia with several assassinations throughout its history, including the most recent, Senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, one of the right-wing&#8217;s cards for the 2026 elections, who died this Monday in Bogot\u00e1, 64 days after having been seriously injured in an attack.
