The death toll in Nepal rose to 25 this Tuesday since the start of the protests on Monday, after the death of the wife of a former prime minister, who was burned inside her home in Kathmandu, and other protesters who died in hospitals and shootings with the police.<\/p>\n
The victim, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, was the wife of former Head of Government Jhalanath Khanal and died at Kirtipur Burn Hospital after being rescued with critical injuries, hospital sources confirmed to EFE.<\/p>\n
This Tuesday, the Civil Hospital confirmed to EFE the death of three protesters, while the police reported another two deaths in a shootout with security forces in the Kalimati neighborhood, which are added to the 19 deaths on Monday.<\/p>\n
Violence also spread to the prisons. According to the local media ‘Onlinekhabar’, more than 900 prisoners escaped from Kaski prison in Pokhara, after Generation Z movement protesters stormed the compound, beat security agents and destroyed part of the facilities to facilitate the escape.<\/p>\n
Other jails such as those in Kailali and Lalitpur were set on fire, reported the local media The Kathmandu Post.<\/p>\n
The Parliament, the Office of the President, the Supreme Court, and the residences of at least two dozen ministers – including the private residence of the recently resigned K.P. Sharma Oli – were set on fire during the day, as were the offices of the Kantipur Media Group, the country’s largest media conglomerate.<\/p>\n
Protests erupted following the government’s decision to ban access to 26 social networks, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, a measure that young Nepalese people interpreted as an attack on freedom of expression, in a context of growing discontent over corruption and inequality within Nepal’s political class.<\/p>\n
Authorities are keeping Kathmandu airport closed for security reasons, while political pressure grows following the resignation of Prime Minister K.P.
