Far from being an isolated or marginal space, its natural wealth and strategic position in the Arctic place it at the center of the interests of the main world powers.

Located between North America and Europe, Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark under a regime of broad autonomy that allows it to manage its internal affairs. However, its importance far exceeds its demographic dimension, as under its extensive ice sheet are essential mineral resources for the global economy and a key location for international security and trade.

Among its greatest attractions is the abundance of strategic minerals, particularly rare earths, which are essential for the manufacture of electronic devices, electric vehicles, wind turbines, and military equipment. Furthermore, uranium, iron, zinc, gold, and diamond deposits have been identified, as well as potential oil and gas reserves in its surrounding waters.

In addition to these resources, there is another of growing strategic value: fresh water. Greenland concentrates about ten percent of the planet's fresh water in the form of ice, an asset that becomes more relevant in a context marked by climate change and water scarcity in various regions of the world.

The progressive thawing of the Arctic has allowed the opening of new maritime routes, with a significant reduction in navigation times between Asia, Europe, and North America. This phenomenon reinforces Greenland's role as a key point for the control of maritime traffic and global trade, while facilitating access to resources that were previously inaccessible.

You can read: Denmark and the US do not resolve their disagreements over Greenland and create a working group

United States has maintained a constant interest in the island, primarily motivated by national security considerations. In northern Greenland operates the Pituffik air base, formerly known as Thule, considered strategic for early warning and anti-missile defense systems. Added to this is Washington's interest in guaranteeing access to critical minerals and containing the growing influence of China and Russia in the Arctic region.

China, for its part, considers Greenland a relevant piece within its global expansion strategy. The Asian country has expressed its intention to participate in mining and infrastructure projects, within the framework of the so-called Polar Silk Road, aimed at consolidating new trade routes in the Arctic.

Russia, with an extensive territorial strip in the Arctic, has defined this region as a strategic priority. Its focus is on the control of maritime routes, the exploitation of energy resources, and the strengthening of its military presence in the far north.

For the European Union, Greenland represents an opportunity to diversify access to critical raw materials, promote scientific cooperation, and strengthen its role in the environmental governance of the Arctic.

You can read: France, Sweden, Great Britain, Norway and Germany confirmed the sending of troops to Greenland...

In this context, Greenland faces the challenge of balancing economic development with environmental protection and the preservation of its cultural identity. The island seeks to attract investments that boost its growth, without compromising the fragility of its ecosystem or its aspiration for greater political autonomy.

In this way, Greenland ceases to be perceived solely as a vast icy territory and emerges as a strategic player on the global stage, where natural resources, climate change, and power disputes converge, which could decisively influence the political and economic future of the planet.

Greenland, the largest island on the planet, mostly covered in ice and with a population of around 56,000 inhabitants, has become one of the most coveted territories of the 21st century.
