Barahona.\u2013<\/strong> Community and environmental organizations in the Southern region demanded that the Government stop what they describe as illegal exploitation of aggregates in rivers and mountainous areas of several provinces, while calling for a march next Sunday in Barahona in defense of natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complaint was made by community leader and environmentalist Domingo F\u00e9lix, who, representing various environmental advocacy entities, denounced an alleged environmental emergency situation caused by the indiscriminate extraction of construction materials in different parts of the country’s South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the slogan \u201cWater yes, gravel pit no!\u201d<\/strong>, F\u00e9lix stated that these activities would be affecting important water sources, as well as ecosystems located in Barahona and other provinces in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his statements, he called on President Luis Abinader to order the cessation of aggregate exports from communities in Azua and Peravia, as well as the halting of extractive operations in specific areas that, as he denounced, are causing environmental damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activist announced a peaceful demonstration for next Sunday, warning that communities will continue to carry out protest actions if the authorities do not take measures to address the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he pointed out that one of the main points of concern is the constant transit of trucks loaded with materials to the port of Barahona, a situation that, he maintained, affects the road infrastructure and could have consequences for the region’s water sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F\u00e9lix also requested that the authorities investigate alleged irregularities related to the operation of a gravel pit located in the El Cobo area, claiming possible non-compliance with current environmental and mining regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community organizations reiterated their call to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to intervene in the situation and guarantee the protection of the watersheds and ecosystems of the Southern region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
