Washington .- <\/strong>U.S. President , Donald Trump,<\/a> denied this Wednesday having asked Venezuelan opposition leader Mar\u00eda Corina Machado not to return to Venezuela following the earthquakes that shook the country, after reports emerged regarding alleged restrictions or recommendations from his Administration to prevent the opposition leader’s travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No, not at all. How am I going to say that?” Trump replied when asked by reporters aboard Air Force One during his return to Washington from Turkey, following his participation in the NATO summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president praised Machado and recalled that she gave him the Nobel Peace Prize medal as a reminder of the relationship between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The return of Mar\u00eda Corina Machado to Venezuela<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Trump’s<\/a> reaction came after the investigative outlet Axios reported last week that sources within the Administration considered Machado’s attempt to enter Venezuela a “grotesque act of political opportunism.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, high-level White House officials expressed their discomfort with Machado’s attempts to return to Venezuela in the context of the humanitarian emergency, noting that her actions have generated “unnecessary drama” within the State Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, Machado wrote on her X account: “I will return. Not as an event, but as a promise that is fulfilled step by step, because my place is there, with you. And when we meet, we are going to lift this country up from the same side we have always been on.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earthquake figures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The death toll from the earthquakes two weeks ago in Venezuela rose this Wednesday to 3,811, while the number of injured remained at 16,740, the same as the Sunday report, according to official information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of deaths represents an increase of 126 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
