Indotel highlights digital connectivity as key to Caribbean competitiveness<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Guido G\u00f3mez Mazara highlighted the Dominican Republic’s investments in digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and the expansion of 4G and 5G networks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punta Cana.\u2013<\/strong> The president of the Board of Directors of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), Guido G\u00f3mez Mazara, stated that digital connectivity has become a strategic factor to boost competitiveness, attract investment, promote social inclusion, and strengthen the economic development of Caribbean countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his welcoming remarks at the 41st Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition of the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO)<\/strong>, G\u00f3mez Mazara highlighted that the Dominican Republic is committed to transforming its productive model through the development of technological infrastructure and the strengthening of the digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official highlighted among the country’s main initiatives an investment of over US$500 million for digital exchange infrastructure<\/strong>, as well as the strengthening of international connectivity through submarine cables and progress in the implementation of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he highlighted the efforts to develop national capabilities in artificial intelligence and the intention to integrate the Dominican Republic into global semiconductor industry value chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Dominican Republic does not just consume technology, but is inspired to produce it,\u201d stated G\u00f3mez Mazara.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Regarding telecommunications, the president of Indotel pointed out that the institution is working on the expansion of 4G and 5G<\/strong> networks, the management of the radio spectrum, and the execution of actions aimed at reducing the digital divide and strengthening competition in the market<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

G\u00f3mez Mazara maintained that regulation must contribute to creating favorable conditions to attract investment and, at the same time, ensure that the population has access to quality telecommunications services at affordable prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that sense, he indicated that one of the main challenges consists of preventing citizens from being excluded from the digital economy due to factors such as the cost of services, geographic location, or a lack of digital skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dominican Republic formally joins CANTO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During his speech, G\u00f3mez Mazara also highlighted the formal incorporation of Indotel into CANTO, which makes this conference the first annual participation of the Dominican regulatory body as a member of the association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He considered that cooperation between Caribbean countries constitutes a strategic necessity to face the challenges derived from technological transformation and to facilitate the exchange of experiences regarding regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing part of the ecosystem gives us access to conversations that shape the Caribbean digital future,\u201d he\/she expressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The official pointed out that CANTO’s vision of advancing from connectivity towards greater global competitiveness coincides with the strategy being developed by the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his view, the Caribbean has the potential to become an attractive destination for high-value investments and to develop new technological capabilities that will allow the region to integrate more competitively into the global digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CANTO 2026 brings together the regional technology sector<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The 41st CANTO Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition<\/strong> is taking place from August 9 to 12 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana, with an agenda focused on topics such as connectivity, innovation, investment, regulation, and digital competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
