New York.- Apple on Monday announced a plan to invest more than $500 billion in the United States over the next four years, "its largest spending commitment to date" according to the company, which includes the hiring of 20,000 new employees and a new server factory in Texas.

"We're optimistic about the future of American innovation and proud to build on our long-standing U.S. investments with this $500 billion commitment to our country's future," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

The tech giant said it will open a 250,000-square-foot server plant in Houston in 2026 to produce servers for Apple Intelligence, its artificial intelligence company.

In addition to the new Texas facility, Apple said it also plans to hire about 20,000 new employees across the United States.

Most of the new hires will focus on research and development (R&D), silicon engineering, software development and artificial intelligence and machine learning, according to the company.

An attempt to mitigate the impact of tariffs

The announcement comes after Cook and US President Donald Trump met last week and could be an attempt to mitigate the trade impact of Trump's international tariffs.

Since the Republican came to the White House, the US has implemented a 10% tariff on China and threatened to impose a 25% tariff on chips.

In 2018, during the first Trump administration, Apple also promised 20,000 new jobs as part of a $350 billion spending spree in the US, along with a new campus in Austin, which is still under construction, according to The Verge.

In its statement today, Apple said the company is “one of the largest taxpayers in the United States,” having paid more than $75 billion in taxes over the past five years, including $19 billion in 2024 alone, adding that the company provides more than 2.9 million jobs across the country.

Apple's announcement coincides with the new Trump administration's "America First" rhetoric, which advocates halting corporate offshoring and bringing manufacturing back to the country, and comes after a clear rapprochement by Apple's corporate leadership with Trump, in line with the other big tech companies.
