Santo Domingo. – In an operation aimed at combating the illegal trade of endangered species, the Dominican Fisheries and Aquaculture Council (CODOPESCA) seized 259 pounds of leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) meat from a fishery export company. The species, processed into portions and ready for vacuum packing, was fraudulently sold as tilapia and dried salted cod.

Legal protection and conservation efforts

The leatherback sea turtle is one of the five species of sea turtles that inhabit the Dominican coast and is under permanent ban, protected by Law 307-04 and Decree No. 308-12. Its capture, processing, and sale are strictly prohibited both nationally and by international conservation agreements.

CODOPESCA's Director of Fisheries Resources, Ángel Luis Franco, supervised the seizure and highlighted the importance of training personnel to conduct rigorous inspections and curb the illegal trafficking of marine species.

Legal actions and environmental commitment

Authorities have reaffirmed their zero-tolerance stance toward the exploitation of restricted species. Those involved in this illegal act will face the penalties established by current legislation.

CODOPESCA reiterated its commitment to preserving marine biodiversity and complying with fishing regulations, emphasizing the need to protect natural resources to ensure the ecological balance and sustainability of coastal ecosystems.

Investigations continue to determine the scope of this illegal trade network and prevent future attempts to traffic protected species in the country.
