Holy Sunday.– Deputies expressed their confidence that the Criminal Code will ultimately be approved in this legislative session, arguing that political and external conditions have changed, eliminating international pressures that would have hindered its progress in the past.

The deputy for the province of La Vega, Rogelio Genao Lanza, spoke of the need to update the Penal Code to adapt it to the new times.

"We need to update this piece of legislation to modern times. The accumulation of penalties, technological crimes, punishment for corruption, punishment for violence against women. These are some of the advantages of the new Penal Code," said Genao Lanza.

He also maintained that the lack of international pressure will facilitate the discussion and approval of the Code. "We believe it's a positive environment since there was a change of administration in the United States, and many of those funded NGOs that attacked and pressured Congress, that organized the camps, no longer have the budgeted support to attack Congress in that regard," he concluded.

On his side, the deputy of Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Eugenio Cedeño, agreed that the reduction in foreign pressure will facilitate the approval of the Code.

"I hope that this time, after so much handling, so much work, it can be approved, especially now that the external pressure that existed before no longer exists, at the levels that existed before. I didn't believe it could be approved here, while the Democratic Party was in power in the United States, and things have changed now; there's a new line of thinking," he said.

It should be noted that the Penal Code has been the subject of debate in the country, particularly regarding the inclusion or exclusion of the three grounds for decriminalizing abortion, as well as the definition of new crimes and the toughening of penalties.
