Italy prepares code of ethics for educators after Only Fans teacher case

Rome.- Italy prepares a ethical code intended for educators following the high-profile case of a teacher at a private nursery school in the province of Treviso (north) who has been suspended from employment and pay after some parents discovered her profile on the adult platform Only Fans.

The Italian Ministry of Education is working with a group of lawyers to develop some ethical standards for school personnel, adapting the existing code of ethics for public administration workers for school workers, sources close to the case indicated this Friday.

And a large part of that code is focused on the correct use of social networks, they added.

The teacher in the case is Elena Maraga, 29 years old, and in recent days has given several interviews to explain that it all began when a mother found her private OnlyFans profile, a platform that gives the possibility of publishing sexually explicit content in exchange for money.

The discovery prompted a complaint to the teacher coordinator and the director of the daycare center where the woman worked as a teacher.

Maraga clarified that he hadn't signed any contract with the school regarding the need to refrain from posting social media content and said that if some parents had viewed his profile, "it means they're registered with OnlyFans, so it's not clear where the problem lies."

The ethical standards in which Education works They will update the code of conduct for public employees: a regulation that was last renewed in July 2023 with the introduction, among other things, of specific rules governing the behavior of public employees on social media and which will now likely also include sexual content.

One of the code's articles states that "when using their social media accounts, employees must take every precaution to ensure that their opinions or judgments regarding events, things, or people are not in any way directly attributable to the public administration to which they belong."

It also states that "the employee is obliged to refrain from any intervention or comment that could harm the prestige, decorum, or image of the administration to which he or she belongs or of the public administration in general."

The Italian Federation of Infant Schools, which brings together private, Catholic, and Christian-inspired nursery schools, including the nursery where Maraga worked, has also announced the approval of an ethical code to regulate teachers' behavior on social media.
