Colombian Justice sentences a brother of former President Uribe to 28 years in prison

On Tuesday, Colombian Justice sentenced Santiago Uribe, a cattle rancher and brother of former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez, to 28 years and three months in prison for his role as leader of the paramilitary group known as 'Los 12 Apóstoles,' which is attributed to numerous homicides in northern Antioquia, as reported El Tiempo. The court of appeals overturned the 2023 acquittal and held that Uribe Vélez was the "leader and director" of the criminal apparatus, and ordered him to be linked to "all the deaths" allegedly committed by that structure. The sentence is not final until the Supreme Court decides whether to admit the extraordinary appeal of double conformity, to which every person convicted in the first instance is entitled.
