Rafael Amaya will star in a new series about Joaquín 'el Chapo' Guzmán

Mexico.- Mexican actor Rafael Amaya announced this Monday on his social media that he will be the protagonist and producer of the new series about the Mexican drug trafficker Joaquín 'el Chapo' Guzmán, which will be told from the perspective of his wife, Emma Coronel, and the life she had with the capo currently detained in the United States. In the publication, Amaya reports the exclusive in which Deadline magazine specified that the interpreter, known for the series 'El señor de los cielos' will be one of the executive producers of the project, as well as Coronel and Maritza Ramos with the Amaya Productions label. Zero Gravity Management, a company that has participated in the production of titles such as the series Ozark, which -with the leading role of actor Jason Bateman (Marty Byrde)- narrates the links of organized crime between Mexico and the United States, also joins the production team. The creative team is looking for the screenwriter who will write the script for the as-yet-untitled production.

Although it is known that the series will be a crime drama with elements of fiction that covers themes such as power, loyalty and survival through the experiences of Coronel with Guzmán, who was considered one of the most powerful capos in the world along with Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho', killed this Sunday by the Mexican authorities.

Series about drug trafficking

According to the production team, Guzmán will not participate in the series, however, Coronel highlighted that her husband has followed Amaya's work after having given life to Aurelio Casillas in the ten seasons of 'El señor de los cielos'. In addition to being an executive producer, Coronel will have an active role in the selection of the series' cast, especially in the character that will embody her story. Emma Coronel is known for being the third wife of 'El Chapo' and for having served a three-year sentence in the United States for various charges related to drug trafficking until September 2023. With a 32-year age difference between them, Coronel and the Mexican drug lord met in 2006 during the celebration of local festivities in her hometown, Canelas (Durango, Mexico), which crowned her as beauty queen. The producer's father, Nacho Coronel, was one of the main partners of the Mexican drug lord until his death in 2010. Guzmán's figure has fueled the popularity of series about drug trafficking in the world, as his criminal activity has been projected on the screen in other titles such as 'El Chapo', starring Marco de la O, as well as 'Narcos: Mexico', with the performance of Alejandro Edda.
