Santo Domingo.- The General Directorate of Migration (DGM) assured that its actions are guided by respect for Human Rights, a conduct that is demanded of the personnel who work in the interdiction operations carried out throughout the national territory to contain the presence of illegal foreigners, in compliance with Law 285-04 on Migration and its implementing regulation, 631-11.

“Our actions are carried out with strict respect for the fundamental rights of the individuals involved, guaranteeing dignified treatment, adequate safety and hygiene conditions, and the guarantee of due process, in accordance with national and international human rights regulations,” explains the institution in a press release.

Also, add that as part of the strengthening of the management system it implements, the processes are subject to continuous improvement programs and the institutional performance is regularly evaluated with a view not only to generating significant positive changes, but also to identifying and eliminating inefficiencies to meet the quality objectives defined in the institutional strategic plan as well as those established by the presidency of the Republic. The DGM also indicates that in the event of complaints of questionable actions, these are investigated and, if proven, those responsible are sanctioned according to the severity of the infraction. It states that for transgressions of different kinds to the regulations governing the institution in the current year, more than a hundred collaborators have been dismissed and/or sanctioned and that the current personnel hiring policy – for the first time in the DGM – includes mandatory participation in an induction and training to guide on the conduct and ethical principles that must be maintained.

So far this year, the DGM has deported more than 145,000 foreigners, mostly undocumented Haitians, in interdiction operations carried out in the national territory. The actions are based - indicates the DGM - on intelligence strategies to identify and apprehend people in an irregular migratory condition, with the aim of applying the rules on the regulation and control of migration in the country.

The institution states that it will continue with the operations to locate, detain, and repatriate individuals in an irregular migratory condition, in compliance with Law 285-04, always ensuring that the processes are carried out in strict adherence to principles of justice, equity, and respect for the rights of all.
