The Federal Council (Swiss Executive) approved this Friday an allocation of 64 million francs (68 million euros) to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for the period 2026-2028.
With this assistance, "Switzerland contributes to saving thousands of lives", but also seeks to reaffirm the role of Geneva, where the global fund is based, "as a central place of multilateralism", at a time when the cut in funding from countries like the United States has forced severe cuts to many of the agencies and NGOs that have their headquarters in the Swiss city.
In its official statement, the Swiss government recalled that the work of the global fund has contributed to saving 65 million lives since its creation in 2002.
"Switzerland's renewed commitment contributes to continuing these advances and to developing new prevention and treatment strategies," the Executive highlighted.
The Federal Council added that at a time of conflicts, crises and turbulence for multilateralism, "Switzerland sends a clear signal, that international solidarity is not only possible, but effective."
