The company
Topps reported that the patch will debut in this Monday's game in
Sacramento, the same city where James began his historic professional career in 2003. After each game, the patches will be removed from his uniform and some will be integrated into
ultra-rare cards, intended for the collectors' market.
A Look at His Career
The patch design is divided into four colors, in reference to LeBron's most emblematic stages in the league: his first cycle with the Cleveland Cavaliers, his time with the Miami Heat, his return to Cleveland, and his current stage with the Lakers.
It also includes the
number 23, which symbolizes both his active seasons and his most iconic jersey number, as well as a
silhouette of James with his arms raised, evoking the pre-game ritual in which he throws magnesium into the air.
NBA Recognitions
LeBron,
41 years old, will not be the only player to wear a special patch this season. The NBA implemented commemorative badges this year for
rookies in their debut, as well as for the winners of the
MVP,
Rookie of the Year and
Defensive Player of the Year awards from the previous season.
