Santiago.-.Eight days after the death of the child Luis de Jesús Meléndez, just two years old, allegedly struck by a motorcyclist traveling at high speed on La Piña street, in the municipal district of Santiago Oeste, his relatives reported that the case remains without concrete answers from the authorities and warned that they feel the minor’s death is being ignored by the judicial system.
The child’s mother stated that, despite the pain the family is going through, they have not yet received clear information regarding the actions taken by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to prosecute the person responsible for the incident.
“My son was not an animal, he was a human being. Eight days have passed since he died and no one is giving us an answer. They send us from one office to another and we feel like they are mocking our pain. The only thing we want is for justice to be served,” expressed Yahaira Sánchez, the mother, through tears.

The relatives maintain that they have audiovisual evidence that would show the driver traveling at high speed moments before the impact, as well as witnesses who saw the tragedy.
However, they report that the authorities have stated that the evidence presented would not be sufficient to support the file.

Outrage grew this Monday as family members arrived at the Santiago Palace of Justice, where a hearing was being held against Franklin José Hernández Rodríguez, identified by the minor’s relatives as the driver involved in the incident.
The child’s aunt and guardian, Ivelisse Meléndez, stated that the family feels “orphaned by the Prosecutor’s Office” because, as she denounced, there is no formal accusation for the minor’s death despite the gravity of the case.
“We have a video where you can see the speed he was going. The child was not playing in the street as they have tried to make people believe. He was struck right in front of us. We have given statements, we have presented witnesses, and yet we feel that only the driver’s version is being taken into account,” he stated.

The relatives also questioned that the authorities have not informed them about the course of the investigation or about possible measures related to the minor’s death, a situation they consider a re-victimization for those who are still facing the grief of the loss.
