Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov, the main candidate to hold the position of President of the Supreme Court, assured this Tuesday that he sees the re-establishment of the death penalty as impossible.
"My opinion is firm: this is impossible, and the state's position on this is final. It is based on the fundamental decisions of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation," he declared when speaking before the Federation Council or Russian Senate.
In 1996, Russia imposed a moratorium on the application of the death penalty, an indispensable condition for entering the Council of Europe, from which it was expelled in early 2022 due to the war in Ukraine.
In recent years, Russian politicians have called for the death penalty, as in the case of the Ukrainian soldiers who invaded the Kursk region, whom the Kremlin considers terrorists.
The prosecutor, who took office in 2020, considers his nomination to the position of president of the Supreme Court as a vote of the utmost confidence.
"First of all, I would like to point out that I consider the nomination by the President of the Russian Federation, my candidacy for the position of President of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, as a sign of utmost trust, an enormous responsibility towards our society and the people," he assured.
Subsequently, the Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Construction supported Krasnov's candidacy for the position and recommended his appointment to the chamber.
Last week, the Higher College of Judges recommended Krasnov for the position, who is appointed by the Senate for a term of six years on the proposal of the head of the Kremlin.
The position of Supreme Court president became vacant in July after the death of Irina Podnosova, who was a university classmate of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Anti-Corruption Foundation, created by the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, reported on Monday in one of its investigations that since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in 2022, Krasnov's family acquired properties worth almost 1.5 billion rubles ($18 million).
In addition, activists pointed out that a 304-square-meter apartment near the Kremlin, valued at 760 million rubles (more than 9 million dollars), was registered in the name of his two-year-old son, Mikhail Krasnov.
Over the past two years, the Attorney General's Office has been dedicated to formalizing the demands for the nationalization of various companies based in Russia, which have subsequently been re-privatized.
