Dío Astacio presents a remodeling and tactical urbanism project for Sabana Larga Avenue

Santo Domingo Este.- The mayor of the Santo Domingo Este City Council, Dío Astacio, presented the project of "Remodeling and Tactical Urbanism of Sabana Larga Avenue", a comprehensive intervention conceived under a people-centered city model, which seeks to reorganize traffic, strengthen commerce and guarantee safer, more accessible and functional spaces for all residents. Astacio explained that the transformation of Sabana Larga represents a paradigm shift in the way urban space is designed, prioritizing pedestrians and universal accessibility. “Cities cannot be designed solely for those who drive cars. Our city must be designed and structured so that pedestrians can walk in safe spaces, where people with disabilities have inclusive sidewalks that improve their mobility,” said the mayor. The proposal was technically presented by representatives of the firm AGP Limited, who explained that the project includes the expansion and adaptation of sidewalks, the construction of accessible ramps, the formalization of parking lots, the reorganization of crossings, the incorporation of urban furniture, and the application of tactical urbanism strategies to correctly delimit spaces and improve coexistence between pedestrians and vehicles. Prior to its official presentation, the ASDE conducted a citizen survey in the vicinity of the avenue to gauge the perception of residents and merchants. Regarding the intervention to organize traffic, 72.97% rated it as excellent, 13.51% as good, and 13.51% as regular.

Regarding the total renovation of the road, 65.79% considered it excellent, 26.32% good, and only 2.63% expressed a negative assessment. Although respondents recognize that during the execution, more traffic jams could be generated during peak hours, temporary detours, and adjustments to transport routes, the majority understands that these are momentary sacrifices in the face of lasting benefits.

Among the main benefits expected by the citizenry are the reduction of traffic jams and accidents, the enhancement of the commercial environment, the creation of safer and more accessible spaces, adequate drainage and more durable urban services, in addition to saving time and fuel. The mayor reiterated that Av. Sabana Larga is not only a thoroughfare, but a strategic axis that connects commerce, services and communities, so its transformation will directly impact the quality of life of thousands of citizens. This project will also extend to Av. Venezuela, Charles de Gaulle among others.
