July 24th is International Tequila Day, a drink with a Mexican seal that is consumed all over the world accompanied by salt and lime.
Surely you have had the opportunity to try this unique alcoholic beverage at some point. Now you know that there is an international day dedicated to it.
Why is International Tequila Day celebrated?
The date was chosen because on July 24, 2006, UNESCO declared the agave landscape (the plants from which tequila is extracted) and the ancient industrial facilities of Tequila as a World Heritage Site.
It is worth remembering that Tequila has another celebration on the calendar, as the third Saturday of March is celebrated in Mexico as National Tequila Day.

What is tequila and how is it made?
Tequila is a distilled beverage extracted from blue agave plants and was originally produced in Jalisco (Mexico). In fact, it is the most representative drink of Mexico, although it is now exported all over the world. It has a Denomination of Origin, regulated by a Regulatory Council.
Tequila comes from the heart of the blue agave plant, a type of pineapple from which the raw material is extracted. Its production process can take more than 10 years from the time the agave is planted until it matures.
Its planting and production must be carried out in the territories declared under the Tequila Denomination of Origin (DOT). This includes 181 municipalities across five states of the Mexican Republic: Jalisco, Nayarit, Guanajuato, Tamaulipas, and Michoacán.
Types of Tequila
We can distinguish two categories in tequila:
- Tequila: is made from a mixture of sugars, of which at least 50% must come from agave.
- 100% agave tequila: is made exclusively from sugar derived from agave.
Depending on the time and method of maturation, we can distinguish the following varieties of tequila:
- White or silver
- Young or gold
- Reposado
- Añejo
- Extra añejo

To celebrate International Tequila Day, you can get together with friends and enjoy a glass of this very special drink, accompanied by salt and lime. Or, you can buy a bottle of tequila with a Designation of Origin from one of the online stores available for that purpose.
