More than 20 transgender people attempt suicide together by ingesting floor cleaner in India

India.- Around 24 transgender people attempted suicide by ingesting floor cleaner last Wednesday in the Indian city of Indore. The incident occurred after a heated dispute amid growing tensions between two factions of the local transgender community, reported the Hindustan Times newspaper.

The authorities received information about an altercation in a house in the area known as Nandlalpura and upon arriving they were informed that several people had taken an unknown substance. They immediately called the national emergency system and were transferred and admitted to a nearby hospital, where everyone remains stable.

Although it is not clear what the motive for the collective suicide attempt was, it would have been a desperate act in response to the inaction of the authorities in the face of alleged aggressions and intimidations against the community. It is alleged that the leader of one group was harassing members of another, incited by mutual rivalry.

The Times of India señala that a trans woman appeared at a police station and stated that she and her followers were being threatened and psychologically harassed by several individuals for several months, which would have caused the recent events.

Some are concretely relating the fact to the alleged violation of a trans person at the hands of two individuals who claimed to be journalists. Although the abuse would have occurred three months ago, the victim filed a complaint again this Tuesday. And on Wednesday, while the 24 intoxicated people were being urgently transferred, other members of the transgender community arrived at the hospital demanding measures against the alleged aggressors. They also tried to commit suicide by dousing themselves with kerosene, but agents prevented it. The Police reported the arrest of the alleged rapists. At the same time, an investigation is underway within the trans community, divided by leadership issues with ongoing clashes in recent months over territorial and financial dominance. An officer stated that there is a long-standing dispute with accusations of harassment and extortion that have led to multiple and frequent complaints at various police stations in Indore.
