TNR moves towards process optimization with the implementation of artificial intelligence

Santo Domingo. The Executive Directorate of National Irrigation Technification (TNR) has completed the first stage of a digital transformation process that will lay the foundation for the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, with the goal of modernizing its operations, optimizing resources, and expanding its response capacity for the benefit of the country’s agricultural producers.

The initiative is developed with non-reimbursable resources from the World Bank and the support of the Republic of Korea’s cooperation, focused on strengthening the institution’s technological capabilities and preparing for the integration of AI-based solutions to improve the management of irrigation modernization programs.

In that sense, the executive director of the TNR, Claudio Caamaño Vélez, explained that during this first phase, the proposal for the development of an institutional modernization platform was presented, which will allow for a significant increase in the entity’s operational efficiency.

“We are building an institution prepared to harness the potential of artificial intelligence in public management. With this transformation, we will be able to offer more services, execute more projects, and generate greater results for producers, using available resources more efficiently,” he stated.

Caamaño Vélez pointed out that projections indicate that, with current human and financial resources, the TNR will be able to triple the number of projects it supports and executes. He added that, in later stages, the incorporation of AI could considerably multiply institutional capacity, without the need for proportional increases in operating costs.

The modernization will allow for streamlining processes, improving data-driven decision-making, optimizing project tracking, and strengthening the institution’s strategic planning capacity, in line with global digital transformation trends in the public sector.

Likewise, the TNR plans to progressively expand the number of agricultural tasks benefiting from mechanized irrigation systems. After reaching a goal of 20,000 tasks impacted, the institution aims to double and triple that reach in the coming years, contributing to a more productive and resilient agriculture in the face of climate challenges.

The entity also works to enhance the reach of the Fund for the Promotion of Technological Advancement of the National Irrigation System (Fotesir), with the vision of mobilizing increasingly larger investments for the agricultural sector, while maintaining an efficient and sustainable administrative structure.

As an international benchmark, the TNR takes as a model the experience of the National Irrigation Commission of Chile (CNR), recognized for maximizing the impact of its investments through highly efficient management supported by technological tools.

With this strategy, Tecnificación Nacional de Riego reaffirms its commitment to promoting innovation, digital transformation, and the future use of artificial intelligence as key tools to strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of Dominican agriculture.
