DR and Portugal strengthen economic ties at their First Tourism, Investment and Trade Meeting

LISBON, PORTUGAL. – The Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Portugal held the First Dominican Republic–Portugal Tourism, Investment, and Trade Meeting, a historic event that seeks to consolidate strategic alliances and sustainable growth between both nations. More than 140 years of diplomatic history The extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador, Patricia Villegas de Jorge, highlighted that this space is based on a solid bilateral relationship that exceeds 140 years. Diplomatic ties between both countries date back to the end of the 19th century (1879–1880), when Portugal established its first consulate in Santo Domingo.

In the commercial field, in the last five years the Dominican Republic exported a total of US$21.7 million to Portugal, corresponding to 204 products, with edible fruits (US$5.2 million), plastic materials (US$4.5 million), footwear (US$4.4 million), as well as tobacco and its substitutes (US$2.1 million), highlighting the potential for growth and diversification of trade between both countries.
