In January 2024, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook the nearby town of Aksu, leaving three victims and damage to homes and infrastructure. The west of China frequently suffers these telluric movements, because it is located near the place where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates rub against each other, in the Himalayas. However, on numerous occasions the tremors do not cause significant damage, due to the low population density of the region.
