Every June 19th, World Albatross Day is commemorated, a date intended to raise awareness about the importance of these seabirds and the dangers they face in the oceans. The albatross is recognized for having one of the largest wingspans in the animal kingdom and for traveling thousands of kilometers over the sea with barely a flap of its wings.
The day was promoted by conservation organizations to raise awareness about threats such as incidental fishing, marine pollution, and climate change. Currently, many albatross species are in danger of extinction due to the reduction of their habitats and the decline of their food sources.
