"Clear language strengthens citizen trust," says Argentine judge

Santo Domingo.- The judge of the Criminal Court of Buenos Aires, María Lorena Tula del Moral, highlighted the importance of using clear language in judicial resolutions as a way to bring justice closer to citizens and strengthen the legitimacy of the system. "Public information is very important for citizens to understand our decisions. That allows us to have more legitimacy and more trust. If people don't understand us, they can hardly trust us," he stated during his participation in the First International Open Justice Conference. The magistrate explained that the International Plain Language Movement promotes that judicial rulings be drafted in a simple, understandable manner on a first reading and free of unnecessary technicalities.

“Se trata de eliminar palabras en otros idiomas, como el latín, o expresiones demasiado técnicas, y optar por términos más coloquiales y frecuentes en el uso común”,

puntualizó.
He added that this practice also involves structuring texts better, with shorter and more logical paragraphs, avoiding extensive and subordinate constructions that hinder understanding.

“There are many tools we can apply to make a sentence clear from the start and not require translation or further explanation”.

Tula del Moral concluded that clear language not only favors access to justice, but also reinforces the transparency and legitimacy of judicial decisions before society.
