Chinese President Xi Jinping presented an initiative for "global governance" during the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, with which he intends to build a more "just and equitable" world. "I hope to work with all countries for a fairer and more equitable global governance system and move towards a community with a shared future for mankind," Xi said at a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO. The leader highlighted that the founding declaration and the SCO Charter made it clear from the beginning that the organization's members should "promote a more democratic, just and rational international political and economic order." "We have jointly debated regional issues, built platforms and mechanisms, and benefited from cooperation. We have also promoted and put into practice numerous new concepts of global governance. The SCO has increasingly become a catalyst for the development and reform of the global governance system," he stated.

Principles of the initiative

The Chinese leader listed the five principles on which he wants to base the future global governance system. The first is that countries must adhere to sovereign equality, which means that "all countries, regardless of their size, purchasing power and wealth, participate, make decisions and benefit equally from global governance," Xi indicated. The second principle is that all countries must respect international law. "There should be no double standards, nor should the internal rules of a few countries be imposed on others," he emphasized. The third principle provides for multilateralism. "We must defend the vision of global governance based on broad consultation and joint contribution for the common benefit, strengthen solidarity and coordination, and oppose unilateralism," he stated. According to the fourth principle announced by the Chinese president, nations should promote a people-centered approach, and to do so they will have to promote "a reform and improvement of the global governance system to ensure that the people of each nation are actors and beneficiaries." The fifth and final principle calls for focusing on taking concrete actions. "We must adopt a systematic and comprehensive approach to coordinate global actions, fully mobilize the various resources and strive to achieve more visible results," Xi said.
