The Jimmy Kimmel show returns this Tuesday to ABC's programming after suspension

Los Ángeles (EE.UU.),- The ABC network announced that, starting this Tuesday, it will reinstate the popular late-night show of Jimmy Kimmel, suspended last week after his comments about Charlie Kirk, the ultra-conservative activist murdered last September 10th. ABC made the announcement this Monday after holding talks with its parent company Disney about the suspension, which has cost the company multiple criticisms.

A Disney spokesperson explained that the network decided to suspend production of the popular show "to avoid further aggravating" the situation the country was going through after Kirk's death. "We made this decision because we felt that some comments were inappropriate and therefore insensitive. We have spent the last few days in conversations with Jimmy and, after them, we decided to bring the program back this Tuesday," added the spokesperson. The program's return comes after a major controversy over the network's decision to silence the comedian, which defenders of rights and freedom of the press considered a violation of freedom of expression protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The cancellation to Kimmel occurred hours after the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, suggested that the Government could take action against the chain's affiliates that broadcast the comedian's show.

This Monday, some 400 artists - including legendary Hollywood stars - signed, along with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), an open letter requesting public support to condemn the suspension, described as indefinite, and defend freedom of expression.

The avalanche of criticism - including that of Republican figures such as Senator Ted Cruz - led the White House to deny, last Saturday, any involvement in the suspension of Kimmel's program following the comments he made after Kirk's assassination. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on Monday in an interview with Fox News that U.S. President Donald Trump "did not exert any pressure". However, Trump celebrated the comedian's suspension and threatened to revoke the broadcast licenses of channels that criticize him, arguing that those with licenses are not authorized to go against him.
