Dominican painter Ada Balcácer dies in Miami

Santo Domingo. - The renowned Dominican painter and visual artist, Ada Balcácer, passed away in the city of Miami, leaving an invaluable legacy for Dominican and Latin American art. Born in Santo Domingo on June 16, 1930, Balcácer is considered one of the most influential creators of her generation and a reference in the visual arts in the Dominican Republic.

Throughout her career, she received important recognitions, including the National Prize for Plastic Arts in 2011, and in 2017 she was declared a Cultural Reserve of the Nation by the Banco de Reservas, a distinction that reaffirmed her extraordinary contribution to the national culture. Her work was characterized by a deep aesthetic sensibility and a constant exploration of color, form, and spirituality.

Balcácer was trained at the National School of Visual Arts in Santo Domingo, where he had as teachers key figures such as Josep Gausachs, Celeste Woss y Gil, Manolo Pascual, Gilberto Hernández Ortega and Luichy Martínez Richiez. In 1951 he emigrated to the United States, residing for twelve years in New York, where he continued his training at the Art Students League, an experience that expanded and strengthened his artistic language.

In addition to her work, she developed an important teaching career as a professor of Engraving at the School of Fine Arts and Drawing at the Faculty of Architecture of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD). She participated in the First Hispano-American Biennial of Madrid and in 2011 the Eduardo León Jimenes Cultural Center dedicated the retrospective "Wings and Roots" to her, in homage to her six decades of contribution to the visual arts. Her death mourns the cultural world and leaves an indelible mark on the history of Dominican art.
