Trump says the U.S. has collected more than $600 billion in tariffs

Washington.- United States President Donald Trump said this Monday that the North American country has raised more than 600 billion dollars due to the tariffs imposed on its commercial allies as part of the trade war initiated by the Republican in April 2025. «We have raised, and will soon receive, more than $600 billion in tariffs,» Trump wrote on his Truth Social network in a post where he reiterated his complaints against the «fake news media» that «refuse» to talk about these results. According to the president, the media "want to interfere in the upcoming decision on tariffs by the Supreme Court of the United States, one of the most important in history," referring to the case the Supreme Court is analyzing regarding the legality of Washington's levies. "Thanks to tariffs, our country is, both financially and from the point of view of National Security, much stronger and more respected than ever," Trump insisted.

Trump's Trade Measures

Since his return to the White House in January 2025, the U.S. president has intensified his protectionist trade policy and imposed tariffs on dozens of trade allies, ranging from a base of 10% to 50% in the case of Brazil and India, as retaliation for the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro and the purchase of Russian crude oil, respectively. Last November, the Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments about whether or not Trump had the legal authority to approve most of the tariffs implemented. The case reached the country's most important court after lower courts ruled that the president had abused his power, according to a lawsuit by several small businesses and twelve Democrat-majority states that denounce the incorrect use of an emergency law to establish these levies. A possible defeat of the Trump administration would mean the cancellation of a large part of the tariffs it has imposed and would force the reimbursement of those funds, tens of billions of dollars to the taxed countries, in turn calling into question US budgetary sustainability.

Instead, a victory would reinforce the presidential power of the New York magnate and could encourage the use of that emergency law to pressure even more other business partners.
