Trump urges Republicans to win the U.S. midterm elections to avoid impeachment

Washington.- Washington.- US President Donald Trump urged Republicans on Tuesday to work hard to win the upcoming November legislative elections to prevent Democrats from initiating impeachment proceedings against him if they regain control of Congress. “They have to win the midterm elections. Because if we don’t win them… I mean, they (the Democrats) will find a reason to impeach me,” said Trump, the only U.S. president to be subjected to this impeachment procedure twice during his first term. "They are going to impeach me," the president repeated in an intervention of more than an hour before members of the Republican Party, where he warned that they do not respond in the same way to the opposition bench because the Democrats "are more ruthless" than them. According to the Republican leader, they should have impeached former President Joe Biden "for a hundred different reasons" and warned that Democrats are "evil and intelligent".

"Fortunately for you, (the Democrats) you have disastrous policies," he pointed out.

The U.S. Legislative Elections

In the midterm elections in the United States, to be held on November 3rd, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and approximately one-third of the Senate will be elected, because senators have staggered six-year terms. During the 2024 presidential elections, Republicans took control of both houses, which has allowed the party to push Trump's second-term agenda and offer the open path to his policies, including the most controversial ones, such as withdrawing funds from health programs. If a larger Democratic majority were to win, the Administration could face more difficulties in implementing its policies due to the deep disagreements expressed by the opposition leadership to Trump and his Government. The two political trials of the Republican began in the House of Representatives under Democratic control. The first was in 2019‑2020 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress for pressuring Ukraine to obtain investigations that would harm then-candidate Joe Biden and the second in 2021, for charges of «incitement to insurrection» for his role in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In both cases, the House approved the impeachment, but Trump was acquitted by a Senate controlled by his party.
