A homeless man dies in Barcelona during the cold snap

Spain.– The arrival of the new year has been accompanied by an intense cold wave that is already leaving tragic consequences in Barcelona. A 57-year-old homeless man died during the night of January 6 to 7 in the Plaza del Poeta Boscà, in the La Barceloneta neighborhood. The city, coastal in nature and with temperatures usually moderated by the influence of the sea and the mountains, has recorded this week lows of between 2 and 6 degrees Celsius. The first police investigations rule out signs of criminality and point to biological causes as the origin of the death, although the corresponding autopsy will be performed in accordance with the protocol. The victim, identified as Eusebio, used to move around the Les Corts neighborhood, although on this occasion he was in La Barceloneta, just one kilometer from the W Hotel, one of the most luxurious in the city.

With this case, there are now five homeless people who have lost their lives on the streets of Barcelona in the last five weeks, according to reports from the Fundació Arrels. The organization has taken the opportunity to denounce the insufficiency of emergency resources in the face of extreme cold episodes.

"It cannot be that metropolitan city councils do not open their own resources and that Barcelona only expands by 100 places when nearly 2,000 people live on the street," they pointed out from the foundation.

The complaint coincides with another recent death of a homeless person in Badalona, also related to the low temperatures. From Arrels they insist on the urgent need to reinforce the municipal devices to protect those who sleep outdoors during the coldest months of the year. According to the latest data published by the Arrels Foundation in December 2025, the number of people living on the streets in Barcelona and its metropolitan area amounts to 1,982, which represents an increase of 43.2% compared to 2024. The entity considers that this is a record figure that highlights the urgency of more effective public policies to address homelessness.
