FL Technics announced Colombian Fredy Yezid Acosta Camacho as Head of Quality and Safety of its new operation in Punta Cana, a position from which he is in charge of the quality systems, operational safety and regulatory compliance of the aircraft maintenance hangar that the company has launched within the Punta Cana Aviation Hub.
Acosta, an aeronautical engineer with experience in quality control and flight safety in Latin American aviation organizations, has been integrated into the project as part of the certification and commissioning process of the company's new MRO base in the Dominican Republic. The appointment takes place in a context of aviation expansion in the Caribbean, driven by the opening of new technical facilities and the increased demand for specialized talent in maintenance, safety, and regulatory compliance, critical areas for the operation of airlines in the region. "It wasn't easy, as my life in Colombia kept me very close to my family. You always miss your friends, but many of them live all over the world, so digital tools helped shorten distances," he says. The position at FL Technics offered him more than just a new job. He saw it as an opportunity to help lay the foundations for the certification process of an important facility before regulatory bodies, establishing quality standards where they did not yet exist.
The transition from Bogotá, a busy and bustling city, to the more relaxed coastal environment of Punta Cana was not an easy change. "We are all Latinos and enjoy good conversation and forging lasting friendships, but living in a cold and congested city, with daily traffic jams, is very different from an island full of sun and tranquility," reflects Fredy. Taking on the challenge of launching the MRO certification from scratch involved frequently switching between complex regulations and creative teamwork. "Sometimes, a process or a step in the certification feels like a chicken-and-egg dilemma," explains Fredy. "It drives you to be flexible and be prepared for both creativity and practical solutions every day." While the work generates new pressures, he finds energy in the team's receptiveness and their enthusiasm for tackling the future together. Development of new programs and establishment of solid standards As Head of Quality and Safety, Fredy's focus in Punta Cana is to establish systems that drive high standards in the long term. His main priorities include the implementation of a comprehensive training program for technical staff and the creation of the plant's safety management system from scratch. "I want each team member to have the skills, confidence, and awareness necessary to perform their tasks independently, and also understand how their work integrates into the overall safety and reliability landscape," says Fredy. Each audit checklist, safety procedure, and training resource is developed with the practical participation of the constantly growing team. Aviation is known for its strict quality standards, but the international and multicultural composition of this team also influences the way Fredy leads. "The safety and quality of aviation always depend on global principles," he points out, "but understanding them is not enough. A true team culture is needed where safety is not just a protocol, but how everyone truly works and supports each other, regardless of their origin." By implementing regular training cycles, open feedback, and participation in periodic internal audits, he is creating an environment where changes are shared, voices are heard, and each improvement drives the entire organization. Looking ahead, Fredy sees each day in the new facilities as a new opportunity to develop both professionally and personally. "Relocating has broadened my perspective, challenged my old habits, and inspired me to seek easier, sometimes better ways," says Fredy. "Building this project from scratch means facing new questions, trying new approaches, and growing together as a team. I see enormous potential for our company here, and even more reasons to be excited about what's coming."About FL Technics
