In recent days, a post has gone viral on social media claiming that spraying perfume on the neck can directly affect the thyroid gland and cause hormonal imbalances due to repeated exposure to chemicals present in fragrances.
Specialists and fact-checkers have clarified that this statement has no scientific basis. While it is true that some components of perfumes and cosmetics can be minimally absorbed through the skin, there is no evidence that applying them to the neck has a direct effect on the thyroid or that it alters hormonal signaling due to anatomical proximity.
Experts in endocrinology point out that the thyroid is not affected by the habitual use of perfumes and that the amounts of substances absorbed by the skin in this context are insufficient to generate a hormonal impact. The idea that perfume "reaches directly" the gland because it is on the neck is a wrong simplification.
However, health professionals remind that applying perfume to areas exposed to the sun can cause skin irritations, allergic reactions, or photosensitivity, especially in people with sensitive skin. Therefore, moderate and responsible use of fragrances is recommended, but without alarmism or misinformation.
