Trump announces that starting today, they will begin to reopen air connections with Venezuela

Washington.- U.S. President Donald Trump announced this Thursday that air trade connections with Venezuela "will open very soon" and ordered, after a conversation with Delcy Rodríguez, acting president of the country, that the process begin today.

"I just spoke with the President of Venezuela and informed her that we are going to open all commercial airspace over Venezuela," the president assured during a meeting with his cabinet at the White House.

Trump stated that he had given "instructions to Sean Duffy (Secretary of Transportation) and everyone else involved, including the military, so that, at the latest by the end of today, the airspace over Venezuela is open and so that planes can fly to Venezuela." Last November, before the military operation that this month deposed Nicolás Maduro, Trump launched a message warning that the airspace of the South American country would remain completely closed. One day after the detention of Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, on January 4, the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a new notice ("notam" in aeronautical language) about the "potentially dangerous" situation in the Maiquetía region "at all altitudes due to military activity in or around Venezuela." "The threats could pose a potential risk to aircraft at all altitudes, including overflight, arrival, and departure," said the notice, which extends until February 2, as stated on the FAA website. Trump mentioned the Venezuelan community today in Doral, Miami, where most of the Venezuelan diaspora in the United States is concentrated, and assured that he is "very excited" about the news. "U.S. citizens will be able to travel to Venezuela very soon, and they will be safe there, as it will be under very strict control. And the people who used to live in Venezuela, some want to return, and others want to visit, and they will be able to do so," the president emphasized. The last U.S. airline that operated connections between the U.S. and Venezuela was American Airlines, which suspended all its commercial air links in 2019, when both countries finally broke their fragile diplomatic relations.
