Accident on a Venezuelan railroad leaves eight people injured

Caracas.- Eight people were injured this Sunday in an accident on the Ezequiel Zamora railway system of Venezuela, including the driver of a wagon, authorities reported.

The accident occurred at La Rinconada station, in Caracas, from where trains depart to Valles del Tuy, an area of Miranda state (north) near the Venezuelan capital.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transportation assured that the injured are "in stable condition and under medical observation." He pointed out that "attention and rescue protocols" were activated immediately after the accident. The institution added that an investigation was launched in order to "determine the causes that originated the event". The general commander of the Caracas Fire Department, Pablo Palacios, indicated in an Instagram post that it was a derailment that "caused one of its wagons to impact against the wall", after which "the preventive evacuation of approximately 400 people" was carried out. The official indicated that one of the injured was the driver, who suffered "generalized trauma" and was transferred to a healthcare center to receive pre-hospital medical attention. Local media reported that the railway service was temporarily suspended, so several bus units were activated to ensure the transfer of passengers between both destinations.
