World Social Work Day

The third Tuesday of March is World Social Work Day, a date promoted since 2008 by the International Federation of Social Workers. In 2025, World Social Work Day is celebrated on March 17.

The social worker carries out a task that seeks to create a much more positive reality in the different social groups that make up a country. They are the person who detects the reality of communities, looks for solutions to their problems, but also takes advantage of the opportunities in the environment to make families, neighbors or members of a social group see a positive improvement in their reality.

World Social Work Day. 2025 Theme

According to the International Federation of Social Workers, the 2025 theme for World Social Work Day is: "Strengthening intergenerational solidarity for lasting well-being", which emphasizes the importance of care and respect between generations to build strong societies, preserve the environment, and share wisdom for a better future.

Why is World Social Work Day celebrated?

It was during the World Assembly in Salvador de Bahía (Brazil) in 2008 when the International Federation of Social Workers decided to create this commemoration. And for this they chose the third Tuesday of March, a day that has been highly celebrated and respected by all social workers in the world.

What does a social worker do?

The social worker is an activist who seeks to improve the social conditions of a group of people, be it a family unit, a community, or even an entire country. Your job is to detect the shortcomings or challenges faced by members of the group of interest and help them find solutions to their needs.

How to celebrate World Social Work Day?

We invite you to present a reality of the sector in which you live that may be of interest to social workers. The goal is to make the world a better place or at least your community.

History of World Social Work Day Themes

2024 Motto
The 2024 theme for World Social Work Day was: "Buen vivir. Shared future for transformative change". The theme focused on the need for social workers to adopt innovative, community-led approaches that are based on local wisdom and coexistence with nature.
2023 Motto
For 2023, the motto was "Respecting diversity through joint social action".
2022 Motto
In 2022, World Social Work Day was celebrated on March 15, with the following theme: "Building a new eco-social world together: leaving no one behind." In 2022, the World Summit 2022 also took place, formerly known as the World Congress, an event that was led by the International Federation of Social Workers and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD).
2021 Motto
The 2021 motto was: "Ubuntu: Strengthening social solidarity and global connectivity ".

It was based on the motto popularized by Nelson Mandela: Ubuntu, which means "I am because we are". An African philosophy based on teamwork, cooperation, and loyalty. You can also read:

2020 Motto

In 2020, the theme of World Social Work Day focused on the importance of cultivating human relationships to achieve optimal solutions to community problems. This was the last topic addressed in the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development 2010-2020.
