School Infrastructure provides immediate rehabilitation of seven schools impacted by floods in Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata.-The School Infrastructure Directorate (DIE) ordered the immediate intervention of seven educational centers that were affected by the floods registered as a result of the rains in the province of Puerto Plata and in a large part of the country, in the last few hours. Following the overflow of the Camu River, which impacted several communities in that demarcation, school buildings suffered damage to their perimeter fence, loss of furniture, teaching supplies, documents, technological equipment, and appliances, after being flooded and receiving a large amount of mud. In that sense, the head of School Infrastructure, engineer Roberto Herrera, after personally verifying the damage to the educational centers and carrying out a survey with a technical team from the institution, instructed the intervention with several emergency brigades in order to re-establish them as soon as possible, to ensure that more than 3,500 students, teachers and administrative staff return to the classrooms to continue with the development of the school calendar in that demarcation of the Northern Region.

"Today we move to this province of Puerto Plata, to verify the damages registered by the heavy rains, these are atmospheric situations that cannot be foreseen, but we can plan the investment to give immediate solutions, we have received the instructions of Mr. President Luis Abinader and Minister Luis Miguel De Camps, to act and give a timely response in record time to the situation as the rains allow", declared the official. He specified that three rapid response brigades and a contracting company, under the coordination and supervision of engineer Basilio Gonzalez, provincial head of School Infrastructure, in coordination with regional and district education authorities and school principals, will be working 24/7 to rehabilitate the school buildings, as weather conditions allow.

Among the educational centers impacted by the floods in the municipality of Montellano and other areas of Puerto Plata, are the Juan Arturo Lockward Stamers, where considerable damage occurred, loss of technological equipment and teaching resources, detachment of the doors of the first level, blackboards, files and several buses of the School Transportation program TRAE were affected, the Liceo Madre Teresa de Calcuta, Centro Educativo de Boca Nueva, Colegio Makarios and the Centro Educativo Isaura Tucker O’Neil, among others.

Meanwhile, the Regional Director 11 of the Ministry of Education in Puerto Plata, Luis José Sánchez Baldwin, deplored that the damage has severely affected the educational community and highlights that the Government is responding in record time to the situation. Likewise, teachers Wendy Sánchez, director of the Boca Nueva center, and Glenny Cruz, director of the Juan Arturo Lockward school, indicated that the damages recorded are extensive and expressed their hope for a prompt response from the School Infrastructure Department and the other bodies of the Ministry of Education.

During the tour of surveying and supervision, the head of School Infrastructure, Roberto Herrera, was accompanied by Basilio González, in charge of the institution in Puerto Plata; Juan Dionisio Mezquita, director of School District 11-01; the journalist Vargavila Riverón, in charge of communications for the DIE; representatives of the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP), of the Association of Parents, Mothers and Friends of the School (APMAE); provincial supervisors of School Infrastructure and community leaders.
