Milton Morrison promotes road safety education as a graduation requirement in Dominican schools and colleges

Santo Domingo. – The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT) and the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic (MINERD) signed a collaboration agreement that will integrate road education as part of the training process for high school students, with the goal of making it a graduation requirement in the coming years. The initiative will begin to be implemented gradually starting next school year and includes the participation of students in the volunteer program "Traffic Guardians", where they can complete up to 30 hours of social work related to road safety education.

Civic Education from the Classrooms

The agreement is part of a national strategy aimed at strengthening the culture of respect, prevention, and responsibility on public roads, integrating road safety education programs in public and private educational centers in the country. The Executive Director of INTRANT, Milton Morrison, highlighted that road education represents a key tool for the formation of responsible citizens.

"We are convinced that road safety education is the most powerful tool to save lives. We want to train conscious, responsible young people capable of becoming multipliers of good practices in their communities," he expressed.

Social work and student volunteering

As part of the program, students will participate in road orientation sessions, awareness campaigns, identification of risks on the roads, and community activities related to road safety. These actions will allow them to accumulate valid hours of social work within their academic training, linking learning with practical experiences. Even some students who participated in the pilot plan have already received their driving learning permit as part of the educational process.

Training and national scope

The agreement also includes the training of teachers and educational staff, the development of teaching materials, and the implementation of protocols to integrate the "Traffic Guardians" volunteer program in educational centers. Both institutions plan to impact more than 300,000 students by the year 2028 through training sessions and awareness actions on safe mobility.
